Case study: Lenovo-University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham in the city’s Edgbaston area is the United Kingdom’s fourth-largest university, serving about 34,000 undergraduate and graduate students, along with researchers from throughout the UK and beyond.

The university’s Computer Centre is the centre piece of the Birmingham Environment for Academic Research (acronym: BEAR) and the BlueBEAR high performance computing (HPC) cluster. The upgrade to BlueBEAR3 (now in progress) debuts cooling technology that was co-developed by Lenovo and the staff of the university’s Research Computing Team. This innovative technology is expected to cut cooling-energy costs by up to 83 percent and permit substantially denser server configurations.

Infrastructure architect Simon Thompson at the University of Birmingham talks about the challenges the facility has faced in the past, and the power-efficient and scaleable solution presented by a collaboration with business partner OCF and Lenovo.

In this video, Simon explains the type of long-term solution that the institution was looking for, and how Lenovo’s innovative water-cooling system not only increased their data centre’s air-cooling capacity dramatically, but also reduced cooling costs and enabled more compute when required.
