Can AI actually stop hacking?

With the developments of artificial intelligence today, it is no surprise we are starting to hear more about AI generated machinery to fulfil everyday needs. One of the main developments in this includes cybersecurity where we are now talking about how AI can actually be the solution to stopping hackers.

More companies are investing in AI and many AI-based companies are expanding businesses. For example, Darktrace, a leading machine learning cybersecurity company is now expanding, with Darktrace CEO Nicole Eagen stating AI as the best solution to combat hackers.

Other AI-based cybersecurity companies are also stepping up their game with more companies working in this field, such as AlienVault, NetWatcher and SS8.

Big brand tech companies also seem to be adapting AI into their business plans, with companies like Lenovo, Amazon and Google all investing in some sort of machine-learning technology. Lenovo with their ThinkSystem SD530 inserted into their business laptops can now help to create better performances when it comes to AI, as well as Google with their artificial intelligence program.

You can see the progression and see how we are in the AI era already, it is time to question whether AI actually does work as a solution for our cybersecurity.

Current status

At the moment, Ai is mostly used for AI detection, spotting phishing attacks and blocking brute-force intrusion but we are seeing progress in this sector.

As we are seeing more and more breaches in today’s day and age, huge hacks attacking companies like Uber and Yahoo are signs that hacking is becoming more of a trend. It is also a sign of the lack of security developments at the same time.

Seeing the amount of complexity this industry possesses, it is normal to see the slow progress, many argue because it comes down to human interaction – we are all still humans after all. HYPR CEO, a biometric security company, said he saw some groundbreaking solutions with AI recently and felt the security industry would work much faster with AI.

What is the future?

Many cybersecurity companies saw AI as the next big thing, seeing it as developing into everyday electronic and internet usage.

Some of the predictions these cybersecurity experts have about AI include:

Tracking. As in, AI should be able to be implemented into everyday services, such as emails, where it can track and trace the history of the email. This includes its origins, IP address, location data, etc. to estimate whether it counts as a threat or not.

Blocking. With the power of AI, we should be able to track and estimate from where a file came from and even inspect all network traffic. This ability may lead to blocking network traffic in real time if it is seen as a threat.

Should we move to AI?

AI is clearly taking over the security spectrum, and it is most likely that we are shifting there, however, it is important to understand the threats that AI might have as well. With having AI as your main gate for security, it also means a greater risk of being hacked at the same time.

As much as we are shifting into this new realm, it is always still important to have some human touch in our systems.
